Suitcase Filled with Nails: Lessons Learned from Teaching Art in Kuwait

Suitcase Filled with Nails by Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield

For six years I worked as an art professor in the desert state of Kuwait teaching art to university-aged Muslim women. Suitcase Filled with Nails is my story about this time where I earned my student’s trust and learned the consequences of freedom of expression taken for granted in one culture are not always granted in another.

Despite obstacles set by my detractors, I persisted and my students flourished.  Told from the perspective of an artist and educator, Suitcase Filled with Nails is a colorful, true, and timeless tale about living and coping in the Middle East.
